IB Unit: How We Express Ourselves

1st Grade

Central Idea: Living organisms can be diverse.

In this unit, we research a variety of diverse living organisms.

We choose an organism on PebbleGo and list five facts that we learned on a Google Slide (see our template here).

After adding a picture, we partner up with another student in the class to share ways that our organisms are the same and different.

Central Idea: Unity is expressed creatively within societies.

In this unit, we research symbols of unity in places around the world.

Here is the sheet we use to organize our notes.

Some of our favorite books to explore in this activity include:

  • World of Colors series

  • Blastoff Readers: Exploring Countries series

Central Idea: Properties explain the structure of the world around us.

In this unit, we research the properties of objects in the world and what they are made of.

We each pick an item that interests us and add notes to our class book about items and properties around us.

Our favorite series to use for this project is the Start to Finish series. Some examples of books in this series include:

  • From Plastic to Soccer Ball (Robin Nelson)

  • From Sand to Glass (Shannon Zemlicka)

  • From Sea to Salt (Lisa Ownings)

Central Idea: Visionaries throughout history have made a difference through thoughts, words and actions.

In this unit, we research the thoughts, words and actions of a visionary of our choice.

We use PebbleGo to choose visionaries we are interested in learning more about.
